Ford Steps Up Game: Introduces First Performance-Enhanced Edge

Edge is Ford's first SUV to be tuned by the Ford Performance team and will feature the most powerful V6 engine available in its class.

The 2019 Edge ST brings a new sportier look to a utility SUV that was as already reliable as the day is long. Edge ST puts a new animal on the road - a performance SUV with a track mentality, said Hau Thai-Tang, executive vice president of product development and purchasing. From a performance standpoint, and with its SUV silhouette and versatility, it sets a new standard Edge fans will love to drive.

Most Powerful SUV

The development of the new engine for this refreshed midsize wasn't left to chance. The Ford Performance Team was able to develop the most powerful V6 in the segment. The team stuffed a 2.7-liter twin turbocharged EcoBoost engine that creates 335 horsepower and 380 lb.-ft. of torque into the spot the 2018 2.0-liter grocery getter resided.

It will also come standard as an all wheel drive that has a new quick shift 8-speed transmission that also features auto start-stop to help on the MPG's. The engineers also added an aggressive throttle response that will allow this updated rocket to hold gears near redline through cornering. There is also a selectable traction control system and resonant exhaust tone similar to what is found in the Mustang GT. Because of the extra ponies under the hood, the Edge ST will feature an upgraded performance brake package, ST-tuned sport suspension, and unique 21-inch tires. So not only will it be the fastest, but it will be the smartest as well.

The week that I had the Edge to test drive, I had to run some errands that had me traveling all over the Dallas area. It gave me a chance to use the Edge in a way most owners would utilize it. Because it is Dallas, I was able to see how well Ford's auto start-stop technology worked in Dallas traffic. It worked flawlessly, restarting with no inconvenient lag; and when the cabin would warm up, the engine would restart. There was a great balance between keeping the cabin temperatures comfortable and getting best possible MPGs even in heavy bumper-to-bumper traffic.

One of my errands included hauling a bunch of items in the back cargo area. As a father who had very active children as teenagers, this Edge would have been a perfect vehicle to haul all the hockey and baseball gear, suitcases for those weekend tournaments, or even that occasional theater prop for my daughter - and look sporty doing it.

Safety - Ford Co-Pilot360

Because of the advancement of technology in this refreshed Edge, it will now offer the most advanced suite of standard driver-assist technologies among full-line brands. All this technology will allow people to navigate any congested roads they may encounter with ease and confidence. To name a few features, the Ford Co-Pilot360 system includes standard automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind spot information system, lane keeping system, rear backup camera, and auto high beam lighting. When I started to see the shift away from cars to CUV's and SUV's, I was concerned that there would no longer be creative-sport designed and sport-tuned vehicles produced by some OEMs in the future. The Ford Performance Team has shown with the 2019 Edge ST that is not going to happen on their watch. The Edge shows that you can not only own a functional vehicle but can still have fun driving as well.
